Tatami Goods
What is 'Tatami'?
Woven grass Tatami mats originated
in Japan over 2000 years ago, serving many purposes in the Asian
home.
Applied to almost every household
item that requires a flat surface, the mats produce a durable and
sophisticated style of home accessory. It's a totally new world,
when East meets West.

In addition to the woven mat's
decorative features, tradition says that the grass also has
healthful benefits. The Tatami fiber, or "Igusa" in
Japanese, absorbs humidity, ventilates heat and freshens the
air. When used as a floor covering, the weave gently massages
the feet as well, comfortably stimulating blood circulation.
Originally, only Japanese nobility could afford these special
mats. Now, high speed weaving machines make it possible to produce
Tatami much more efficiently. Then each piece is constructed
by hand and accented with hand-woven textiles.
At SiamMandalay, the Tatami mat has been adapted to a range
of functional items. We offer placemats, rugs and pillows in
both casual cottons and higher end silk treatments. This ingenious
material has endured centuries of service in the home, escaping
the usual fall from popularity, having many advantages for a
modern interior. |
